A/Professor mary theophilus


Raised in the Dubai, Mary read medicine in Edinburgh, Scotland and completed her surgical training in Western Australia. Following a Fellowship at The Alfred in Melbourne, Mary returned to Western Australia and has dedicated her efforts to providing colorectal services across the East Metropolitan Health service at Royal Perth Hospital and also St. John of God Hospital, Midland, where she is the inaugural Head of Department of Surgery and the Colorectal Unit lead.

She has expertise in all areas of colorectal surgery and practices minimally invasive surgery. She is the Clinical Lead for the Continuous Improvement in Care – Cancer project, centred on patient reported outcome measures, and extends her patient perspective interest in her current research on treatment refusal.

Mary has been a strong advocate for trainees, particularly ensuring equitable access and diversity. She maintains an interest in quality improvement initiatives in colorectal cancer and has held multiple leadership positions including State Colorectal Cancer Collaborative Lead, RACS Chair – WA, WA Training Committee (GSA) and is currently a Fellowship Examiner, CSSANZ Councillor and a Foundation’s Scientific Research Committee member.
