Dr Amath is an expert community developer whose research focuses on multiculturalism, social inclusion, diversity, leadership and community development. She is a published author and her other publications have appeared in several edited volumes and journals. She is an adjunct Research Fellow at Griffith University and also works at the Islamic Women’s Association of Australia as the National Manager of Refugee Settlement and the CAMS program, a role focused on the prevention of DFV in CALD communities. She is also a co-founder of Sakina Refuge, a short-term accommodation for CALD women and children experiencing DFV.
Dr Amath has strong connections to the community across a number of areas, including youth, women and multi-faith groups. She has served on the Minister’s Queensland Multicultural Advisory Council and the Queensland Government Taskforce looking at Women's Safety and Justice. She currently sits on the Australian Multicultural Council. In 2006, she was the Australian Muslim Woman of the Year. In 2017, she was a finalist for Australian of the Year.
