This intensive 6-day course will cover the competencies set out by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) for training of Designated Aviation Medical Examiners. It is a highly interactive course, with only 24 participants, and employs adult learning principles. It is assessed, with a MCQ and a brief oral/practical test. It includes practical exposure to aviation workplaces (including flight simulators and air traffic control facilities).
The teaching will be led by Dr David Powell, former Medical Advisor to International Air Transport Association (IATA). David is a specialist in aviation and occupational medicine, taught on the University of Otago’s aviation medicine programme for 20 years, and has been Chief Medical Officer at Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia. He holds commercial pilot licences on aeroplanes and helicopters. Working with David will be a teaching faculty of aerospace medicine specialists including Dr Jeremy Robertson, Qantas Pilot, DAME and Medical Officer at Qantas.
This 6-day course is an abbreviated version of the full ASAM 8-day DAME Course which runs annually (usually July in Brisbane).
The 6-day course does not include:
- The day of GA experience. You need to gain this experience yourself (if you do not already have it) by arranging a Trainee Instructional Flight (TIF) with a flying school near you.
- The competency assessment.
All participants will be offered a time slot to sit the competency assessment at one of the next two DAME Courses. There will be an additional cost to sit the competency assessment ($1000).
Available dates for competency assessment: 12 places available on each date.
- Thursday 25th February - RACV Club, Melbourne City
- Saturday 31st July - The Inchcolm Hotel, Brisbane
On completion of the DAME Lite Course in Sydney, we will ask for your preferred date for your Competency Assessment.
The programme is full-time for six days and will require your full attention. The program will run 0800 – 1700 Sunday – Friday.
A reference textbook and required teaching materials will be supplied. Apart from those two components the course meets the prerequisites for achieving certification as Designated Aviation Medical Examiners (DAME) in Australia.
